Birds Need Water

Like all wildlife birds need water everyday to survive.  Not only do they need to drink water, they use the water to bathe and remove dirt and parasites from their feathers.  This makes water a precious resource to birds.

This is why; a consistent source of clean, available water will create a desirable habitat for birds in your yard.  Actually, a well-designed and well maintained birdbath can attract birds that won't come to your feeder for seed!

WHIMSICAL FROG BIRDBATHFor me, the birdbath provides, year round entertainment, while providing a much needed resource for the birds.

In the winter, providing water can mean the difference between life and death.  Birds loose precious moisture from their bodies with each breath. The water must be replenished regularly.  Most bird fatalities in the winter result from dehydration, not from exposure or starvation.  During long periods of extreme cold, reliable water sources freeze over.

How can you keep water available for the birds all winter?

With a birdbath de-icer, often called a birdbath heater.  Now, when offering a heated source of water for birds, you are not giving a hot spa situation.  Most birdbath heaters have thermostats; they warm the water just above the freezing point and then shut off.  That is why birdbath de-icers are economical to use, while maintaining a water temperature suitable for the birds.

Consider adding a birdbath heater to your current bath, or purchasing a bath with a built in heating element.

The birds will appreciate the water, and you will have a great show everyday in your own backyard.

In the hot weather, birds still depend on water to regulate body temperature and to maintain their beautiful feathers.  After a good bath, a bird usually preens, this means that they groom themselves and this adds a protective coat of oil and wax that is secreted by a gland.  This increases the feathers'DRAGONFLY BIRD BATH resiliency and insulating qualities.

To make the bath more attractive to birds, it will help to add a device that moves the water and makes

soft sounds to attract nearby birds.  There are two types of devices available, Misters, (which create a fine spray of water that creates a mist) or Drippers, (which is a device that has a regulated valve which causes it to continually drip water into the bath).

Birdbaths are multi-tasking; they provide life sustaining water for the birds, and a great deal of enjoyment for the provider.
