Thistle Feeders
Below are some of my favorite and classic thistle feeders, with comments on why I like them.  Also, if one strikes your fancy or meets your needs, you can go right to one of the best places to purchase the feeder by clicking on the photograph.  I thought this might be convenient!

The Classic - and my #1 Thistle Feeder

Droll Yankee 16 Inch Polished Pewter Thistle Tubular Feeder  This Droll Yankee tube thistle feeder is 8'' x 2.5'' - 0.5-lb capacity .  I have had the mini thistle feeder version for 10 years and the standard version for over 12 years.  Each is still in my yard feeding gold finches and I have no plans of retiring either soon.

Mickey's Secret to goldfinch success with the feeder below:

If you cut the perches back so that only 9/16" extend out from the feeder, then only goldfinches and redpolls are small enough to feed successfully.

Stainless steel hang wire is long lasting and chew proof. UV stabilized polycarbonate tube with 8 feeding ports. Armor metal bands protect the tube around each feeding port to deter squirrels from chewing. For feeding nyjer seed. Threaded base allows the addition of an optional seed tray. Mfg. Lifetime warranty.

The Upside Down Thistle Feeder is a must for anyone who loves watching bird behavior and wants to give the goldfinches a place of their own. I remember when the person who invented this feed was testing it.  I saw the prototype and thought, its so off the wall . . it's just got to work!  And it does!  Redpolls can also hang upside down and eat.

If you love watching bird behavior, there is nothing more fun than the upside down goldfinch feeder.  I remember when I went to visit the person who invented the feeder and saw the prototype . . . my immediate reaction was . . . "This is crazy enough to work!".  It was explained to me that Goldfinches eat at all types of angles in nature including upside down, most other species including House Finches do not.  I love my upside down feeders and have found they make great presents!

"Looker" is another of my favorite bird feeder manufacturers.

This green vinyl coated mesh thistle bag is 5 1/2 inch wide x 15 inch long.

It hangs by a nylon cord and is easy to fill.

Goldfinch will naturally cling to the mesh bag as they peck the thistle seed through the tiny holes!

Holds 7 1/2 cups of thislte seed.

The roof for the thistle bag is stained brown and adds protection for the seed.

Mickey's Suggestion for Thistle Feeders

Use Straight Thistle or Nyjer in your feeders, it is preferable to Goldfinches.

Also, keep the seed dry!

Wet thistle gets moldy and will stick together and the birds will not be able to enjoy your efforts - and you will not be able to enjoy them!

Note:

I do have photos of a lot of these feeders in my yard, however, they are on slides and I have not yet invested in a slide scanner.  So this seemed like the best way to illustrate, give info and allow you to purchase from the places I know are reputable.  MW

Of Course - you can always use a standard thistle bag, I have listed some below:

  C & S Products #950 Nyjer Sack Feeder

Duncraft Hanging Thistle Stocking Feeder (1-lb capacity - 9.5)

I just found this way cool thistle stocking feeder!

Thislte bags with reservoir

- Finch feeder with built-in reservoir holds more thistle seed.

- Stored thistle seeds refill finch socks as finches eat the seeds

- Gravity feed system replenishes mesh sock to extend the interval between refills.

I think I'll just have to get one !

I have the black oil sunflower seed version of this feeder and love it.
